Social Emotional Learning
About
The Barnstable Public Schools’ district vision is to educate the whole child by creating a student centered school culture that addresses students’ physical, social, emotional, and academic needs by creating a safe and healthy learning environment in which students are challenged, supported, and engaged. We are addressing this through social, emotional, and academic development (SEAD), and positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS).

Second Step
We want your child to be as successful as possible at school. Success in school is not just about reading and math, it is also about knowing how to learn and how to get along with others. We have been using the Second Step® program in your child’s classroom to teach these critical skills. The Second Step® program teaches skills in the following four areas: skills for learning, empathy, emotion management, and problem solving.

Responsive Classroom
What is the Responsive Classroom® approach?
It is a way of teaching that creates a safe, challenging, and joyful classroom and schoolwide climate for all students. Teachers who use the Responsive Classroom® approach understand that all of students’ needs—academic, social, emotional, and physical—are important. Elementary and middle school teachers create an environment that responds to all of those needs so that your child can do his or her best learning.

PBIS
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a prevention oriented framework or approach for assisting school personnel in adopting and organizing evidence-based behavioral interventions into an integrated continuum that enhances academic and social behavior outcomes for all students.

Collaborative Problem Solving
To support students and build vital social emotional skills, a portion of our staff, as well as members of our administration received training from Massachusetts General Hospital’s Think:Kids®. Think:Kids® works with schools and families to address the social emotional needs of students so they can be successful socially and academically. The Collaborative Problem Solving Model® presented by Think:Kids® is based on the premise “kids do well if they can”. Through the Collaborative Problem Solving Model®, adults are taught how to empathize, share their concerns and positively collaborate with children to identify solutions.
